[livejournal.com profile] timprov proposed a question, and I think we have an answer that satisfies me, but I want to run it past you people:

Have Merry and Pippin read There and Back Again, or haven't they?

The answer we came up with is that Merry has and Pippin has not. Because Merry is all cautious and alarmed by things and Pippin wants to poke his nose around and find what's what, and this "do not meddle in the ways of wizards" proverb does not seem to carry as much weight with him. But Merry is kind of looking like someone who is clear from the get-go that Gandalf is not just a source of fireworks and smoke-rings and can be a right bastard when he needs to.

Pippin tried to read it but his ADHD led him to put it aside and forget to take it up again.

I just read that comment to P and he likes it very much.

I endorse this theory.

Ooh, I like this. I sort of want to go back and read LOTR again with this in the back of my mind. See how it reads now.

I know this is not at all what you meant, but I am now imagining Merry having read this book (http://www.amazon.com/There-Back-Again-Pat-Murphy/dp/0812541723).

So There and Back Again has untold secrets in it? Interesting. I wouldn't trust Pippin with even a tiny secret!

Do hobbits have movable type, or was TaBA engraved (or copied by hand?)

"I must be the only person in the Shire besides you, Frodo, who has read the old fellow's secret book." Merry speaking, page 115 of the Unwin hardcover.

I think that's pretty conclusive.

Oh, well then. Nothing like direct evidence.

Pretty conclusive that Merry has. It's possible that he's wrong that he and Frodo are the only two who have read it (though even then, I would doubt that Pippin was on that short list).

Merry was always the brains of the outfit.

This appears to be the traditional view, but I am not convinced that I'm ready to sign on for investigating things always being unintelligent.
